Pakistani food

Pakistani food to stock in a kitchen anywhere.

Pakistani cooking abroad starts with a few things from home: a box of Shan masala for biryani or karahi, granular Tapal tea for doodh patti, a bag of kasuri methi, Khewra pink salt. Add Multan’s sohan halwa, Hunza’s sun-dried apricots and chilgoza pine nuts from Balochistan, and you have the Pakistani pantry.

Many supermarket listings are Indian brands with similar names, which taste different. Each page below explains how to find the Pakistani product, what it is used for and which sellers ship it.

Questions

People also ask

Where can I buy Pakistani food online?

South Asian grocers and Amazon stock Pakistani brands such as Shan, National and Tapal in most countries. Search by the brand name and look for “Product of Pakistan”, because generic searches return mostly Indian brands.

Which Pakistani spices should I buy first?

A box of Shan Chicken Karahi masala, a Shan Biryani mix and a bag of kasuri methi cover most first dishes. Our Shan masala guide explains which box makes which dish.

Is Himalayan pink salt Pakistani?

Yes. Almost all of it is mined in the Salt Range of Punjab, Pakistan, mainly at the Khewra mine.
