The story
Pakistani truck owners spend small fortunes turning their lorries into moving works of art. Every surface is covered: peacocks and fish, eyes to ward off bad luck, portraits, landscapes, reflective chamak patti, and lines of poetry on the tailgate.
The same painters now bring that style indoors. A truck-art kettle is a working teapot, painted by hand with the flowers and patterns of the Karachi highway.

History
Decorated trucks became common in Pakistan in the decades after independence, as drivers and owners competed to have the most striking vehicle on the road. Styles differ by city: Karachi, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Quetta each have their own look.
Truck art reached international museums and festivals. In 2002 a truck painted in Karachi was shipped to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington.
How it’s made
The kettle is cleaned and primed so enamel paint grips the surface.
Bands of solid colour are painted around the body and spout.
Flowers, leaves, birds and borders are painted freehand with fine brushes.
White and gold highlights and dots bring the painting to life.
A clear coat protects the paint for everyday handling.

In Pakistan
