The story

What it is

Walk into a boxing gym in London, New York or Sydney and there is a fair chance some of the gloves were stitched in Sialkot. The city’s sports factories make gloves for global brands and for their own labels, from training gloves to custom fight gloves with your name embroidered on the cuff.

Ordering from a Sialkot maker is a popular way for boxing clubs and fighters to get custom colours and logos at a reasonable price.

Where it comes from

Sialkot’s sports industry dates back to the late nineteenth century, when local craftsmen repaired and then made rackets, balls and protective gear for British soldiers. Combat sports gear became a major line in the late twentieth century as boxing and mixed martial arts grew worldwide.

Photos we are collecting

  • A finished pair of gloves
  • Stitching a glove shell
  • Layered padding before closing
  • Custom embroidered cuff

Have a good photo of one of these? Send it to us and we will credit you.

How it’s made

From start to finished

  1. Cut the shell

Leather or synthetic panels are cut for the palm, back and thumb.

  2. Build the padding

Layers of foam of different densities are shaped and glued.

  3. Stitch and turn

The shell is stitched inside out, turned, and filled with padding.

  4. Close and finish

Cuff, lining and hook-and-loop strap are added, then the glove is checked and paired.

In Pakistan

How people live with it

Boxing has a proud history in Pakistan, especially in Karachi’s Lyari, which has produced Olympic and Commonwealth boxers. Many gyms there train in gloves made a few hundred kilometres away in Sialkot.

Caring for it

  • Air them out after every session.
  • Wipe the inside with an antibacterial wipe and let them dry naturally.
  • Store with the straps open, not in a closed bag.

Buy it well

How to spot the real thing

  • Ask whether the outside is real leather or synthetic, and what foam is used.
  • For a custom order, ask for a photo of a sample before full production.
  • Look for a sewn, not just glued, thumb attachment.
